by Walter Scarborough

The vast majority of research that takes place in the design and construction industry is carried out by manufacturers who evaluate the viability and integrity of the products, materials and equipment they manufacture....

I wondered why field applied solvent borne fluropolmer products like PPG Coroflon and Tnemecs Fluronar were not a tested catagory. We have 4 large metal roof projects with these coatings that are going on 5 years old in central florida. Do you expect the short 3 yr term performance in the acrylic fluropolymer rivals the solvent borne products?

I would like to see a performance test on coatingswith various substrates that address emissivity rates and savings in various climates.

Very Interesting Article. Who initially recommended that this research testing be performed and who funded this expensive and lengthly procedural program? The Research seems to raise more questions than answers regarding its outcome, could someone do a follow up article to help us fill in the blanks and answer some important questions which seems to have been left out of its findings.

Louis, with any research project there is always "something else" which could have been included. You have to draw the line somewhere due to constraints on time, money, or even testing space. There is a fellow at the other end of my hallway who is making a huge matrix of large concrete test blocks to study ASR. He has over 1000 blocks in the plan and a study timeframe of 10+ years.

Mr. Scarborough is to be commended for comprehensively and broadly addressing the overall tech/spec picture in cool roof coatings. His numbers are very accurate when compared to our own field SRI (reflectivity) results for similar locations and similar roof types. A most useful contribution to that growing body of knowledge that is cool roof coating. Well done and thank you. I support Mr. Hickman's comment respecting emissivity.
