Interesting chain of articles. Back on November 30, D+D reported that KTA-Tater would be performing all of the testing for MPI. http://www.durabilityanddesign.com/news/?fuseaction=view&id=6751 On January 31, D+D reports that Walter Scarborough of HALL Building Information Group calls for standards in the paint industry at the SSPC Commercial Coatings and Flooring Symposium. The article also points out that Ken Trimber, president of KTA-Tator Inc., is chair of the Commercial Coating Committee. http://www.durabilityanddesign.com/news/?fuseaction=view&id=7082 February 22, D+D provides an article from Mr. Scarborough detailing the need for standards. http://www.durabilityanddesign.com/archive/?fuseaction=view&articleid=4629&nl_versionid=1750 Then February 29, D+D runs an article from Mr. Trimber under the guise of green coatings and does it perform, but really the article is a commercial for MPI’s standards. Over two-thirds of the article is describing the ASTM standards or modified standards MPI uses for the testing of products. Since Mr. Trimber’s company now performs the testing for MPI, I would guess he would benefit from the further adoption of the MPI standards. Classic marketing campaign. Drum up the need and present the solution. The need for standards does exist, however MPI’s confusing system of products and specifications are not the answer. I should only need to point out, MPI #26, Cementitious Galvanized Metal Primer. This product is specified on almost any MasterSpec based specification that includes galvanized metal, however the use of this type of product on a commercial project is rare at best. This is not the best primer for this type of substrate. Maybe this is coincidence, but I’m calling my initials.

Mr. Sherwin, thanks for the comments. The series of articles for the year and the need to include performance when selecting coatings was actually established with D+D last year, long before MPI discussed subcontracting any testing to KTA. While it is true that we are doing the testing, that doesn’t change the fact that MPI was the first organization to recognize the critical need for performance when selecting coatings, and it’s appropriate that they be recognized for it. There is also a definite need to improve the selection of coatings based on performance, whether it be through MPI, Green Seal, or other organization. I selected MPI as the example because I’m familiar with it, and felt that it would provide the readers with a better understanding of the type of testing that is involved when discussing “performance.” You are also correct when you say that I am the chair of the SSPC Commercial Coatings Committee. I am volunteering a lot of my time to develop SSPC standards for the industry, to improve the quality of cleaning and painting, to develop guidance for the selection of paint systems, to address flooring issues and the certification of contractors – to fill a gap that has existed for years. I’m proud of what we’ve already accomplished in establishing committees and scopes in a short period of time. We would very much welcome your participation and other readers of D+D on these committees. I’ll also be happy to discuss your concerns further if you would like.
