Is there a reason sol silicate coatings are excluded in these many evaluations for permeability and water resistance seeking harmony with natural moisture balance? The coated substrates are ideal candidates for sol silicates.

Mr. Tipps, the purpose of the study was to determine the potential of WUFI to assist in making painting/repainting decisions, rather than to examine the performance of specific coating types. Since we had to control the number of variables so that the preliminary study was manageable, we focused on the permeance of the most common types of coatings being applied to big box stores. The preliminary work suggests that WUFI is a viable tool for making painting decisions, and if the wall type and interior environment are held constant, the same coating systems perform differently in different exterior climates. It should also be noted that in addition to permeance, many other variables effect coating performance, such as wall design and the interior environment. Based on the data available to date, a building-specific analysis should be run to assist in decision-making, and the attributes of the desired coating type, including sol-silicate paints, could be included in the modeling. Part 2 of the study is underway and is again based on a standardized wall type and standardized interior environment to control the number of variables, but it involves a wider range of interior and exterior combinations of coating permeance, and more geographical locations across the country.
