Smith began his two-year term at a meeting of the federation board in September.

Smith joined Sun Chemical as a graduate in 1999 as a Sales and Key Account Manager. Since then, he has progressed through a variety of positions at Sun, including business and project roles with the UK, Ireland and Nordic business units.

Smith holds a BSc in Economics from Loughborough University and an MBA from Cranfield University’s School of Management.

He joined the BCF Board in 2010, replacing Charles Murray.

'A Great Honor'

“It is a great honor to have been asked to serve as the President of the Federation," Smith said in a statement. "I am really looking forward to working with [CEO] Tom [Bowtell] and his team in Leatherhead on their key objectives over the next two years.”

BCF Industrial Sector

With more than 100 member companies, the British Coatings Federation is the representative body for the UK's £2 billion-a-year ($3.1 billion USD) paint, printing ink, powder coating and wallcovering manufacturing industries.

Bowtell said, “Nick has joined at a crucial time in my tenure as CEO where we are still formulating the future strategy of the federation, so I am delighted to have such a capable and enthusiastic president to support me in moving the federation forward.”

With more than 100 member companies, the British Coatings Federation is the sole trade association representing UK paints, printing inks, powder coatings and wallcoverings manufacturers.
