PPG Industries has rolled out an anti-graffiti system that combines two new clear coatings with its graffiti-removing cleaner.

The new Duranar GR and Coraflon GR coatings provide a clear, graffiti-resistant barrier over the pigmented color layer of the coating.

If the coating is spray-painted or marred, it can be cleaned by applying the company's Duraprep Prep 400 graffiti remover. After the solution sits on the stain for 10 to 60 seconds, it can be wiped with a clean cloth or scrubbed with a nylon brush. According to PPG, most stains can be removed in 10 minutes or less.

When applied over either Duranar GR or Coraflon GR, Duraprep Prep 400 can remove graffiti, overspray and other substances from buildings, according to PPG.

When applied on either Duranar GR or Coraflon GR, Duraprep Prep 400 can also remove paint overspray, pen and marker ink, lipstick, scuff marks, tape residue, bugs, tar and many other substances that mar the appearance of commercial buildings, according to PPG.

PPG says it believes the anti-graffiti system is the only one sold and tested by the same company.

$25B Problem

Graffiti costs U.S. commercial building owners $25 billion per year, according to Scott Moffatt, PPG's marketing director for coil and extrusion coatings. The new coatings add a graffiti-resistant product to the well-established Duranar and Coraflon fluoropolymer lines, from PPG's industrial coatings business.

“The added ability to use these coatings as part of a graffiti-resistant system will make them even more valuable and versatile,” said Moffatt.

Duranar GR coatings are available in a variety of low and medium glosses; Coraflon GR coatings are for high-gloss applications.
