Need a paperhanger? You're out of luck.

Yesterday's paperhanger is now a wallcovering installer, reflecting the new skills needed for handling today's silks, bamboo, glass textiles, broadcloth, wood and other sophisticated wallcovering materials.

The "paperhanger" term has been fading from use for years.

Today's wallcoverings are not just paper and they don't just hang, which is why the National Guild of Professional Paperhangers has become the Wallcovering Installers Association (WIA).

Now, the industry's leading organization, the 40-year-old National Guild of Professional Paperhangers, has sealed the term's demise by rebranding itself as the Wallcovering Installers Association (WIA).

Training Planned

"The transition to our new name and logo is symbolic of growth and an exciting future," said WIA president Cyndi Green, C.P.

The new identity brings a new website and plans for a series of online training modules. Graduates of each "WIA University" module earn the designation of "accredited installer."

The newly rebranded WIA will offer online training modules for installers.

"Our new website will focus on our installers and industry-related information, but also offer consumers a place to go to for ideas with photos that showcase the work of our talented professional installers," said Green.

What WIA Offers

WIA bills itself as "a one-stop resource for professional networking, news and education."

"Members can learn about the latest techniques in wallcovering installation and see challenging and inspiring projects from around the world. WIA's vision is to provide a worldwide platform where innovation is valued and the industry continues moving forward together," the group says.

Still, the group clearly holds a soft spot for its roots, noting with a wink that its installers "hang with the best."
