Omnova Solutions has launched a specialty resin formulated to protect commercial, light industrial and residential metal surfaces from the elements.

Pliotec HDT 12 is designed for use in waterborne, high-gloss, anti-corrosion direct-to-metal (DTM) paints and primers.

The new resin is designed for coating systems for metal and wrought iron, metal sidings and other architectural features.

The product launch is specific to the North American and Latin American markets, as the resin is already commercially available in Europe, according to Omnova.

Features, Technology

Omnova says the product provides superior adhesion to ferrous and non-ferrous metals and excellent water resistance.

The resin is based on the company’s proprietary Hydrophobic Dispersion Technology, described as "an advanced polymer architecture designed to create a barrier to water, balancing low permeability with other critical properties such as flexibility, gloss and color retention, and adhesion."

In addition to being APE-free (alkylphenol ethoxylate free) and not requiring anti-corrosion pigments, Pliotec HDT 12 boasts other environmental features, including no added formaldehyde, low demand for coalescing solvents, and low levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), according to Omnova.

Headquartered in Beechwood, OH, Omnova produces emulsion polymers, specialty chemicals and functional and decorative surfaces for a variety of commercial, industrial and residential end uses.

The global technology company had 2013 sales of $1 billion.
