Sherwin-Williams has introduced two ultra-high-solids urethane floor coatings for commercial and industrial projects.

General Polymers 4686 and 4687 are aliphatic polyurethane coatings formulated for manufacturing plants, institutional settings, laboratories, restrooms, locker rooms and similar applications.

In trials, applicators reportedly found the low-viscosity formula easy to apply without leaving lines.

The floor coatings contain reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) levels of less than 50 grams per liter and have little or low residual solvent odor, according to the Cleveland, OH-based coatings company.

The system was developed by the company’s Protective and Marine Coatings business.

The product is available in clear (4686) and pigmented (4687) options for application at a range of film builds (2-6 mils DFT), according to the company.

As a rule, 4686 is applied as a final topcoat over decorative, quartz or paint chip floors, while 4687 would be used over an epoxy primer and/or an intermediate coat, Sherwin-Williams explains.

The system is formulated for use in industrial applications, such as warehouses and manufacturing facilities, according to Sherwin-Williams.

In field trials, applicators said the low-viscosity formulation was easy to brush or roll without leaving roller lines, the company adds.

Additional Features

“These coatings can be placed into service in record time: Dry-to-touch can be as low as 3-6 hours, light traffic is possible in less than a day and, within three days, the system is fully cured,” according to Lonnie Salyers, regional marketing segment director for flooring, North America, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings.

The systems also offer resistance to abrasion, scratches and scuffs; UV stability; high color and gloss retention; and flexibility, the company says.
