Building scientists, designers, students and other experts are invited to conjure, discuss and choose the next big energy-efficient technologies for homes and buildings in a new crowdsourcing campaign.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory's new Crowdsourcing Community is gathering at buildings.ideascale.com.

A new U.S. Energy Department crowdsourcing campaign seeks commercial building product ideas.

The U.S. Energy Department’s Building Technology Office says it launched the website as part of its effort to reduce energy consumption in homes and buildings and enhance U.S. competitiveness in manufacturing, according to an announcement made Tuesday (March 3).

The site is administered by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

DOE is shopping for ideas in these categories:

  • Energy-efficient buildings R&D;
  • Tech-to-Market Ideas; and
  • Commercial Building Products.

How it Works

Participants may register through the website or vote on their favorite ideas.

Submissions, comments and votes will be accepted until May 31. After that, an independent panel of experts will review the most popular idea submissions to determine the “best ideas,” the announcement said.

The best ideas will be recognized during the Building Technologies Office Industry Day, scheduled for September 2015 in Oak Ridge, TN.

As of Tuesday, 11 energy-efficient ideas had been posted and 119 users had registered on the site.

The suggestions included research on vacuum insulation panel technology, modular building facades for retrofit projects and cool roofs.
