A historically significant Brutalist building-turned-campus hub is among six of the U.S.'s “finest examples of library design,” according to the American Institute of Architects.

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth project and five others are the recipients of the 2015 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards, co-sponsored by the American Library Association.

The other winners include a new children’s library and learning center in Little Rock, AR, and a new public library housed in a restored Seaboard Building (a former courthouse and city hall) in Norfolk, VA.

The Claire T. Carney Library is the centerpiece of the Paul Rudolph-designed University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. The Brutalist structure has been reimaged in terms of its facade, color and function.

The 2015 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards honor innovative and striking examples of library design, according to an award announcement.

“As the traditional role of libraries evolves, the designs of these community spaces have changed to reflect the needs of the surrounding residence,” the AIA says.

The awards are presented every two years.
