ACA Develops New Hazard Labels

WASHINGTON, D.C.—New hazardous materials labels designed to communicate in-plant hazard information and comply with OSHA standards are now available for purchase.

The American Coatings Association has licensed the companies LabelMaster and J.J. Keller and Associates Inc. to sell its Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) hazard rating labels.

Paint, coatings and chemical manufacturers are now able to purchase Hazardous Materials Identification System labels developed by the American Coatings Association.

The labels are designed to communicate in-plant hazard information to employees through training and the use of colors, numbers, letters and symbols of types of personal protective equipment, according to the association.

ACA’s system is designed to comply with the workplace labeling requirements of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's revised Hazard Communication Standard, which align with the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals.

Additional Aids

In addition, ACA has other resources to help employers develop and implementation their Hazard Communication Programs, including the Hazardous Materials Identification System Implementation Manual, Fourth Edition and an HMIS Sample Training Presentation.

Labels list types of hazards and include space to indicate what personal protective equipment may be needed.

The manual addresses hazard assessment, labeling, Safety Data Sheets, and employee training.
