PITTSBURGH—Time is drawing short for SSPC college scholarship applications and presentation proposals for the society's 2016 conference.

SSPC 2016 featuring GreenCOAT will be held Jan. 18-21, 2016, in San Antonio, TX, and preparations for the technical program are well underway.

Aspiring presenters for the coatings conference have until May 1 to turn in an abstract submittal form.

In addition, students hoping to snag one of SSPC's six $2,500 college scholarships have until April 30 to apply. (The application may be found online here or downloaded here.)

Scholarship Requirements

The scholarships are open to any student who is beginning or continuing his or her education at an institution of higher learning in the U.S. or Canada. Applicants must be a member of SSPC in good standing, or the child or grandchild of an SSPC member.

SSPC started offering scholarships in 2011.

In addition to the application, candidates must submit two letters of recommendation, high school or college transcripts, and a personal lettter expressing why they deserve the scholarship and what they plan to do in their field of study.

Educating the Industry

SSPC is also recruiting presentations on a variety of coatings-related topics for the 2016 conference and expo.

Abstract submittal forms must be emailed to Sara Badami, SSPC's training and technical program specialist, by May 1 for consideration by the SSPC 2016 Education Program Advisory Committee.

All abstracts will be reviewed, and applicants will be notified about acceptance by June 1.

Abstracts are evaluated in four areas:

  • Originality;
  • Quality of the abstract (clearly defines outcomes, flows smoothly);
  • Relevance/significance to the industry; and
  • Objectives.

Once accepted, a formal, written paper (five- to 10-page minimum) will be required for inclusion in the conference proceedings.

2nd Annual Poster Session

Abstracts are also being accepted for the SSPC 2016 Poster Session, an opportunity for members to display their innovative research and industry ideas.

SSPC introduced the Poster Session at its 2015 show in Las Vegas. Presenters spent two days highlighting their research, which included studies on zinc phosphate coatings, ion diffusion in coatings, and internal coatings stress.

The 2016 session will feature research presentations by an individual or group with an academic or professional focus. Students or young professionals usually present the work.

Poster abstracts are due Aug 30. For more information, contact Badami.
