More items for Maintenance + Renovation

Comment | More

HENDERSON, CO—From mining to flooring, a Colorado company has taken the old adage “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” to a new level.

RepurposedMaterials Inc., of Henderson, CO, takes industrial wastes and byproducts and gives them new leases on life in residential and commercial construction and other areas.

The latest examples include turning old mining conveyor belts into garage flooring and creating a handrail for a luxury condo project from an obsolete ski lift cable.

Do your project specifications call for junk? Maybe the company can help. Repurposing finds creative uses for old items. These handrails were once ski lift cables.

A large military cargo parachute has even been recast as a backyard canopy.

A Middleman

The company essentially acts as a middleman between clients looking to get rid of items (not in a landfill) and architects, designers and others seeking to find new uses for them.

The unwanted materials that make the best repurposing candidates are generic, versatile and adaptable, according to Damon Carson, who founded the company in 2010.

Carson says the trend of repurposing is different from recycling, which requires huge amounts of logistics and energy and usually involves breaking the items down for their individual components.

Repurposing, however, simply uses the waste “as is” in an unrelated, and oftentimes creative, application.
