Attention architects interested in presidential design: The President Barack Obama Foundation has begun its search for an architect to design the presidential library and museum in Chicago.

The foundation released a formal Request for Qualifications Wednesday (Aug. 26) inviting submissions from firms interested in providing architectural design services for the Obama Presidential Center, which will be located on one of two potential sites in Chicago’s South Side neighborhood.

President Obama announced that the libary will be located in Chicago's South Side neighborhood earlier this year.

Submissions are due Sept. 16.

Goals for Center

“With a library and a foundation on the South Side of Chicago, not only will we be able to encourage and affect change locally, but what we can also do is attract the world to Chicago,” President Obama said in announcing the decision to bring the Obama Presidential Center to Chicago.

The Center will house presidential archives, an interactive museum, expansive greenspace, performance facilities and healthy dining options, according to the Obama Foundation.

Selection and Timeline

The RFQ outlines the goals of the facility and asks firms to provide credentials, references, examples of prior work and additional materials.

Once responses are submitted, the foundation says it will review and summarize the responses and present them to the President and First Lady, who will select finalists.

The foundation will then issue a Request for Proposals from those finalist firms selected.

An architect for the library and museum will be announced following contract execution, in early 2016, according to the foundation.

The Center is expected to be completed in 2020 or 2021, according to reports.
