Valspar Awards $25K in Scholarships

Students from around the globe who are studying coatings and polymeric materials at the North Dakota State University in Fargo will receive $25,000 in scholarships thanks to Valspar Corp.

The Valspar Foundation contributed the funds to support up to five graduate student scholarships of $3,000 each through the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials at NDSU and coordinated through NDSU’s Development Foundation, according to an announcement made Thursday (Sept. 24).

The scholarships help students studying coatings and polymeric materials in advancing their research and provides opportunities to further their careers. The image does not depict scholarship winners.

The remaining funds will be used to support students participating in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) through the department.

The Winners Are…

The students awarded Valspar graduate scholarships are:

  • Teluka Galhenage (Colombo, Sri Lanka);
  • Junren Lin (Fuzhou, China);
  • Adlina Paramarta (Java, Indonesia);
  • Alison Rohly (Lino Lakes, MN); and
  • Arvin Yu (Iloilo City, Philippines).

Students receiving stipends for the SURE program are Jeferson Prado Swerts of Machado, Brazil, and Dat Nguyen of Cyprus, CA.

“We appreciate Valspar’s generous support and commitment to promote applied science and education in the fields of coatings and polymers,” Dean Webster, chair of the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials at NDSU.

“These scholarships assist students in advancing their research and opportunities to further their careers.”

Dr. Cynthia Arnold, Valspar’s senior VP and chief technology officer, added: “Valspar is committed to encouraging and helping students further their science and technology education.

"It's critical to provide the coatings industry with a steady pipeline of talent who bring contemporary scientific approaches and information that supports innovation.”
