A new copolymer emulsion product from Cincinnati-based Michelman boasts stain resistance and scrub resistance when used as a binder in architectural paints, wood primers and other coatings, the company says.

Ecronova RA 180 Plus, a new addition to the company’s nine-product Ecronova brand of polymers, is described as a water-based cationic emulsion of an acrylic copolymer. It’s a preservative-free formula, recommended for lending adhesion and water resistance to paint formulation.

Ecronova RA-180 Plus is recommended as a binder in building paints, wood primers and other coatings.

The product is solvent-free, according to the manufacturer, and does not contain surfactants. It has a pH of between 4.0 and 5.0 and is recommended for its alkali resistance. According to Michelman, the product’s minimum film-forming temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Michelman says the technology is especially effective in combatting nicotine and tannin stains, making it an effective component of wood primer formulations. The company also touts RA 180 Plus’s scrub resistance, and adds that the product could be used in two-in-one paint and primer products.

The Ecronova brand of polymer dispersions has been based in Recklinghausen, Germany, for more than 35 years; in 2013, Michelman acquired the company. RA 180 Plus is manufactured in Recklinghausen.

Michelman, founded in Cincinnati in 1949, has several offices in Europe and Asia in addition to its Ohio headquarters.
