A new painter’s tape promises to tear by hand at 90-degree angles, making application easier for pros and do-it-yourselfers alike.

ScotchBlue Platinum Painter’s Tape from 3M is made with a polyethylene backing that the company says enables it to tear at a clean 90 degrees by hand, a feature that 3M says makes it unique among interior painter’s tapes.

A quick, firm tear to the tape results in a perfectly squared-off end, 3M says.

It’s a solution, the company says, to a number of frustrations with paper painter’s tapes.

“We developed the new ScotchBlue Platinum Painter’s Tape as the premium solution to challenges with paper tapes related to masking corners and curves, tape slivering upon removal, and paint seepage to accomplish professional-looking paint projects quicker and easier than ever before,” said Mark Hodgins, global business manager for 3M’s Construction and Home Improvement Markets Division.

The polyethylene backing, according to 3M, not only allows for a clean tear, but helps the tape to come off more cleanly.

The Platinum product comes with 3M’s EdgeLock technology, purported to keep paint from seeping through during application. The tape is also UV resistant and compatible with low-VOC paints, according to the manufacturer.

ScotchBlue Platinum Painter’s Tape retails for $11.99 and comes with a money-back guarantee.
