Reds and yellows get top billing in the 2017 color trend forecast from paint manufacturer Dunn-Edwards.

The company, based in Los Angeles, has released its predictions for what hues will be hot (or cool, or neutral) next year for residential settings. Color expert Sara McLean explains the trends coming down the pike in terms of larger movements in culture and fashion.

The trend report, called “Beyond Wild Imaginations,” offers five separate palettes, in addition to analyses of what the company predicts will be the most popular shades of several different colors.

The trend report, called “Beyond Wild Imaginations,” offers five separate palettes, in addition to analyses of what the company predicts will be the most popular shades of several different colors. Dunn-Edwards discusses aesthetic reflections of the zeitgeist “as society harnesses the power of adventure, creativity, innovation, globetrotting and living a life of joy.”

Five Palettes

Specific palettes designed for the report are:

  • Adventurous Revelations, a mix of bold but natural-looking primaries and neutrals;
  • Creative Ingenuity, brilliant and at times verging on pastel, bringing out references, the company says, to Hawaii, pre-Castro Cuba and Florida;
  • Pioneering Innovations, with a number of deep blues and purples, referencing the ocean and space;
  • Wanderlust, which the company calls “lush, romantic, worldly”; and
  • Joie de Vivre, bright, bold, “spirited and childlike.”

In the full color forecast, the company associates certain architectural and natural inspirations with each palette, along with a set of materials and patterns that line up with it.

Beyond those palettes, Dunn-Edwards predicts the continued popularity of reds and pinks. "Another popular color for 2017 will be yellow, ranging from yellow-green vegetal and honey glow hues, to creamy and pigmented banana yellows,” McLean says.
