Paints and coatings manufacturer The Sherwin-Williams Company has unveiled its Color of the Year for 2017, and the company’s color experts say it’s indicative of a slight warming trend.

Poised Taupe, according to Sherwin-Williams, is a “complex” neutral that isn’t cool—as was the trend for the past few years—but isn’t overly warm, either.

Poised Taupe is the hue for the new year, Sherwin-Williams says, describing the shade as a “complex” neutral that isn’t cool—as was the trend for the past few years—but isn’t overly warm, either.

Bucking the Trend

According to the paint company, “monochrome gray” dominated for the past five years or so, but the taupe shade bucks that trend, inching ever so slowly toward a warmer tone trend.

Sherwin-Williams released its four color trends for 2017 in June, including Poised Taupe in its “Noir” palette.

“Consumers yearn for spaces that feel welcoming and hug them as they enter. Earthen brown combined with conservative gray, creating Poised Taupe, embodies all of these emotions,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams.

Taupe for Commercial Design

While the Poised Taupe announcement is aimed mainly at those working with residential design, Sherwin-Williams notes that trends in commercial spaces are moving toward warmer climes as well.

“Since commercial color direction tends to enjoy longer lifecycles, Poised Taupe is on the forefront of this trend, offering the ability to endure over time, yet complement a wide range of designs,” said Wadden.
