Paint manufacturer Valspar (Minneapolis, MN) has selected a dozen hues to help define what 2017 will bring.

The company announced its Colors of the Year Tuesday (Oct. 18), releasing photos of the 12 colors in different residential contexts. The colors, largely earthy tones, “reflect key prevailing trends: sustainable and simplistic living, spirituality and self-improvement,” the company says.

Valspar's 12 colors of the year include, clockwise from top left: Crushed Oregano, Autumn Russet, Wet Pavement, Dreamy Clouds, Peach Encounter and Vivid Blue. (All have alternate names based on where they are sold.)

"Choosing a color for a project can be challenging when options are endless," said Sue Kim, Valspar color strategist. "So, we've curated a collection of 12 livable hues to give consumers choice and confidence in discovering and expressing their own style."

The Colors

Because Valspar paints retail at several different retailers, the colors selected for the company’s 2017 collection can be found under multiple names.

Also included in the collection, clockwise from top left: Daisy Spell, Twilight Purple, Promenade, Sweet Violet, Roadster Blue and Smoke Infusion.

Among others, the collection includes:

  • A yellow-green known as Crushed Oregano, Fickle Pickle or Parrot Feather, "a balanced yellow green that captures the essence of spring's first blooms," according to Kim;
  • A reddish brown called Autumn Russet or Red Maple, which the company says reflects “a renewed respect for the earth's rich but limited resources”;
  • A warm gray called Wet Pavement or Silver Bonnet, which Valspar calls “a must-have neutral that encompasses the timeless and enduring beauty of natural materials; and
  • An ultramarine called Vivid Blue or Blueprint, “evoking a feeling of endless possibility.”

Valspar paints are sold at Lowe’s, Ace Hardware and independent retailers.
