Artists’ Paint-Mixing Videos Go Viral

We’ve all heard something that’s less than thrilling compared to “watching paint dry,” but a contingent of social media users seems to be getting a kick out of another part of the process: watching paint get mixed.

The hubbub centers mainly around artists’ paints—acrylics made for use in the studio. A small cadre of artists has figured out that mixing, usually just an early step in making a work of art, can be a piece of art in and of itself. On Instagram and Twitter, a number of accounts center on short videos of color-mixing.

'Oddly Satisfying'

Vancouver artist Annette Labedzki has 312,000 followers on her Instagram account, which posts many color-mixing videos (along with pictures of her finished products, of course). Well-known online outlets like Huffington Post have called her videos and others like them “weirdly calming” and “oddly satisfying.”

Perhaps surprisingly, Labedzki isn’t the only one posting color-mixing videos. In fact, she’s not even the only one in Vancouver doing it: Sara J. Molcan has racked up more than 64,000 Instagram followers with her mixing videos and other art posts. And an account called Paint Mixtures collects mixing videos and aggregates them on Twitter.

Oddly mesmerizing? Color theory lessons in action? Entertainment for really bored Internet users? They might be all three, but these color-mixing videos have brought at least a few artists new fame—and given plenty of people a new relaxing pastime.
