Question posted - September 19 to September 25, 2011:

Are there special primers and surface preparation requirements for painting unpainted aluminum?

Selected Answers

From Gary Burke of Finishing Brands , America's on September 26, 2011:
The answer is yes for both questions. As far as primer requirements, it all depends on the topcoat. You may need to wet-blast the surface for the primer to "bite in" well. If there are heavier concentrations of acids or salts, or alkali materials in the air or coming in contact with the aluminum, it must be primed  and topcoated with appropriate materials!

From Anand Karamandi of Carboline on October 11, 2011:
Yes, proper surface preparation is needed. An easy method is to blast the surface to SSPC-SP 7, followed by a good coat of mastic epoxy at 4-5 mils dft,  top-coated with a 2-pack aliphatic urethane at 3 mils dft if it is going to be exposed to elements.

From Frank Tomasi of Designer Decorating Company on October 7, 2011:
Normal prep systems should be followed. The surface should be sanded; air-blown clean; and washed with mineral spirits, denatured alcohol, or acetone. Then, prime with an appropriate aluminum primer such as Rust-Oleum Aluminum Primer or Sherwin-Williams DTM (Direct To Metal) Wash Primer.

From tarun datta of Berger Paints Bahrain on September 26, 2011:
Use a single-pack or two-pack etch primer. Light abrasion is sufficient.
