What are the most effective procedures for protecting steel and adjacent concrete together?

     In the case of a pipeline, the pipe being confined within a high pH environment will not corrode, providing the depth of cover is sufficient and steps are taken to maintain the passivating layer by preventing contaminants from entering the matrix. In a Low/No moisture environment, we have also removed one of the four essentials necessary for corrosion. A concrete that is stabilized will afford protection to both the concrete and the steel. This approach will protect both while knowing that service conditions may change with time. I consider that a protected structure will allow for accidents, incidents and all types of abuse during it's life cycle. A citrus processing facility may be converted to a battery manufacturing use with a new owner. We, as professionals, must take all exposure events into consideration when longevity of the structure is job one!

     In the pipeline world, concrete surrounds a steel cylinder, on both exterior and interior. The concrete provides corrosion protection to the steel by increasing the pH.

     The most effective way is to provide a No/Low moisture interior environment to increase the resistance of the electrolyte to the flow of electrons associated with the electrochemical reaction of a corrosion cell. At the same time a sealed and stablilized concrete surface stops carbonation to maintain the high pH concrete surrounding the embedded steel. The optimum application window is a new concrete to waterproof and keep the 13.2 pH intact! With the application of a stabilizing material, we are able to stabilize the concrete matrix to provide a solid within the gel/pore capilarry system and prevent any contamination of the interior. At the same time we prevent internal chemistry from migrating out to the surface to react with an atmosphere. With this application we also create a surface ready to receive a protective or decorative coating that experiences far superior adhesion and spread rates.Aged concretes are candidates for treatment as long as they have the ability absorb the stabilizing material into the matrix. The product is topically applied with a low pressure spray followed by a back roll to increase dwell time and depth of penetration. At that point, both the concrete and steel are protected!
