What is the state-of-the-art treatment and preservation of the many cables used on suspension bridges?

I have been unimpressed with calcium sulfonate alkyd (CSA) products in aggressive (seaside) environments.

Well, sleeving and grouting has fallen out of favor due to some notable corrosion issues. Red lead paste is mostly out of favor despite its effectiveness. Galvanize, grease and sleeve is newly popular. The newest is probably galvanize, sleeve and dehumidify.

Thoroughly clean. Apply one coat of any solvent-based, two-component epoxy primer followed by two coats of a nano-structured polyurethane hybrid. A full 15-year labor and material warranty is offered by the manufacturer of the product.

Pressure wash with hot water, dry, then apply a high-ratio calcium sulfonate alkyd (HRCSA) penetrating sealer followed by a high viscosity self-priming finish coat applied by mitt.
